My friend Chi Ho just sent me a photo of this old collaboration. I'm lately remembering a sense unapologetic complexity that I used to inhabit very readily at the turn of the millennium. Yesterday I finished the Patti Smith memoir Just Kids, and felt reconnected to the urgency of not fitting into any box or label. It can be confusing to have a gazillion interests; I want to have a clean brand that I can champion and that others can grok. But I think what interests me most about "my brand" is a specific feeling. I was remembering my old web site, newcenturyschoolbook.com. (It's currently dead, but maybe I'll revive it.) newcenturyschoolbook.com was a diaristic maze of chaotic design and surprises. It dealt entirely in feelings. When I first created tanyabezreh.com it was to add some clarity to utter chaos. But now only the clarity remains, and there's something very limited about a resume or a bio. It's great for supporting or explicating my research. But as a means of self-presentation, it leaves me pretty cold. I hope I have the time to reconnect with the messy, right brain approaches soon, and until then please forgive this tidy imitation of self-revelation.
